With the goal of promoting public health, community, and academic collaboration, and informing future public health investments, CPR3 is excited to announce research funding opportunities through RFP mechanisms focused on improving the health and wellbeing of people throughout the state of California, especially our most vulnerable residents. Findings from funded studies will inform public health policy, planning, and decision-making, now and in the future.
Working with experts in public health, academic research, and community engagement, and with oversight from the CPR3 Scientific Steering Committee, CPR3 has identified the following four research priority areas:
- The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and adolescents (RFP closed)
- The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health (RFP closed)
- The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on social and economic outcomes (RFP open)
- Behavior change and public health communication (RFP open)
CPR3 is now accepting applications in the following two priority areas:
Social & economic outcomes
Behavior change & communication
Those eligible to apply for funding include:
- Individuals with Principal Investigator (PI) status at any UC campus.
- Applicants who do not yet hold “principal investigator” status at their UC institution may apply and will be required to submit a PI waiver and/or letters of support from research mentors.
- Early-stage investigators at a career level beyond postdoctoral training (or equivalent) and less than five years as an independent investigator are encouraged to apply. Trainees/fellows are required to submit a letter of support from a primary research mentor.
- Applicants from all UC campuses are highly encouraged. This RFP is not limited to UC campuses with health-specific programs. All types of disciplines – e.g., social science, economics, public health, policy, epidemiology, data science, etc. – are encouraged, as long as the proposed research is responsive to the RFP
Other requirements:
- PIs must have a departmental mechanism to receive funding.
- Lead PI applicant may submit to only one award per RFP but can be listed as a co-investigator on other submissions provided that the projects are distinctly different.
- Applicants may apply to parallel CPR3 RFP opportunities provided that each application has unique specific aims.
- Proposed research activities must take place in California. If other settings or non-California based entities are included in the proposal, clear justification is required.
- Applicants are encouraged to work with other UC campuses, community-based organizations, and/or advocacy organizations that bring complementary perspectives. Named collaborators must provide a letter of support.
- While the lead PI applicant must be from a UC institution, up to two additional co-PIs and up to five co-investigators can be included in the application. These individuals do not need to be affiliated with a UC campus.
CPR3 is offering three award types within each RFP:
- The Pathfinder Award supports formative or exploratory research projects. Up to $100,000 direct costs.
- The Catalyst Award enhances research with existing preliminary data and/or research infrastructure that has practical application to the communities it aims to serve. Up to $200,000 direct costs.
- The Implementation/Scale Award supports implementation research and scale-up of interventions/programs with existing evidence of effectiveness. Up to $300,000 direct costs.
- The project period for each award type is one year. Funds must be spent no later than June 30, 2024.
