The Modeling Consortium data use agreement connects UC researchers to state public health data

Modeling Consortium Data Use Agreement

The UC-CDPH Modeling and Advanced Analytics Consortium (Modeling Consortium) unites UC investigators and California public health leaders in a forum to help guide policy decision-making. Launched in 2021 to inform COVID-19 decision-making, the Modeling Consortium implemented the first-ever UC-CDPH data use agreement and created a data sharing pipeline for accessing state COVID-19 data.

Through the COVID-19 DUA, UC investigators can request access to CDPH state-wide COVID data including labs, deaths, facilities, locations and vaccinations. Visit the Modeling Consortium website to learn more about the data that is available and how to request access.

About the data

Through the consortium, UC investigators have access to CDPH state-wide COVID data including labs, deaths, facilities, locations and vaccinations.

Review our CDPH COVID Data Dictionary (Excel) for a detailed look at what's included in the datasets.

*10/15/24 Updates:

  1.  On 10/9/24 the CDC discontinued previous versions of the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) reporting templates. As a result, updates to the hospitalization data table (name: HOSP_TBL_UCOP_AGG_NHSN_CHA) are currently paused. Updates will resume, once data using new reporting requirements is available and pipelines have been restored. The anticipated timeline is several weeks.
  2. In some good news, CDPH's open data portal now includes data tables on Flu and RSV, in addition to COVID-19. This data can be accessed by visiting https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/RespiratoryVirusReport.aspx, and under "Resources" selecting "Explore CDPH Data: COVID-19, Influenza, RSV".

Accessing the data

Data access is a simple 3-step process.

Step 1: Application
Apply for the data by completing this data access request form (REDCap).

Step 2: Attestation
Complete consortium program attestation and PHI/PII data attestation.

Step 3: Access
Receive access to UCSF’s Research Analysis Environment (RAE) where the data is stored and you can do your analysis.

Working with the data

All analysis of CDPH data must remain in UCSF's Research Analysis Environment (RAE).

Import / Export
Investigators have the ability to import and export files through RAE. This includes:

  1. Importing companion data sets into RAE to support your analysis work.
  1. Exporting your results, graphs, algorithm outputs.
  • Please note: You still cannot export the CDPH datasets in accordance with the program attestation. All analysis of the CDPH data must remain in RAE.

Review detailed import and export instructions (PDF) for more information.
